Assessment of protective effects of curcumin mouthwash on radiotherapy and chemoradiation induced oral mucositis in patients with head and neck cancers (Phase II)

Phase II

Summary :

Oral mucositis (OM) is one of the most prevalent adverse effects of radiotherapy and chemo-radiation in patients with head and neck cancers. OM has unfavorable outcome such as pain, infection, malnutrition, decrease of quality of life and treatment discontinuation, thus prevention of OM and treatment of that is very useful. In this study, the effects of curcumin on prevention of OM in patients with head and neck cancers with radiotherapy and chemoradiation are assessed. 86 patients will be enrolled. Patients with head and neck cancers under the treatment of radiotherapy and chemoradiation will be randomized in two groups. In our double blind study, curcumin and placebo mouthwash will be prescribed to case and control groups. The preventive effects of curcumin on radiotherapy and chemoradiation induced oral mucositis will be assessed with WHO scale and PROMS (Patient Reported Oral Mucositis Scale). Data will be analyzed with spss13 software.
